Feeder Cable

How to connect high-amperage feeder cable from a generator or building service.

  1. Safety First — Authorized Personnel Only

    Feeder work involves high-amperage (100A–800A) three-phase power. NEVER attempt this without proper training and authorization. Always verify the power source is locked out and tagged out before handling feeder ends.

  2. Identify the Lugs

    Feeder cable has color-coded conductors: black (L1/Phase A), red (L2/Phase B), blue (L3/Phase C), white (neutral), and green (ground). Verify color coding matches the power source before connecting anything.

  3. Connect Ground First, Hot Last

    When making up feeder, connect the ground conductor first. When striking feeder, disconnect hots first and ground last. This is the universal rule for electrical safety — do not reverse it.

  4. Verify Phase Rotation

    For three-phase equipment (distros, dimmer racks), phase rotation matters. Use a phase rotation meter to confirm A-B-C sequencing. Incorrect rotation can damage motors and cause equipment to run backwards.

  5. Dress and Secure the Run

    Feeder cable is heavy — coil it properly to avoid kinks and trip hazards. Use cable ramps over walkways. Never run feeder over sharp edges or pinch points. Label both ends of the run.
