Gobo Handling: Choose, Install & Focus

Learn the difference between metal and glass gobos, how to match a gobo to a fixture size and holder, how to verify orientation, and how to install one safely after cool-down.

  • Choose the right gobo — match the pattern, material, size, thickness, and fixture optics.
  • Use the correct holder — fixed holders keep a pattern stationary; rotating holders can spin or index a compatible gobo.
  • Install carefully — inspect the disc, hold it by the edge, seat the retainer, and never force a holder into the gate.
  • Focus at the target — adjust the lens or focus control for the projection surface, then trim spill with shutters.
  • Protect people and gear — wait for cool-down, avoid damaged gobos and unapproved materials, and report overheating or movement.
