What Does the Channel Fader Do?
The channel fader is a linear (straight-line travel) attenuator that controls the final level of that channel into the main mix bus. It sits at the very bottom of the channel strip after all processing has been applied — EQ, dynamics, effects sends. Unity gain (0 dB, marked with a line) means the signal passes through unchanged.
Unity Gain (0 dB) & VCA Law
Most console faders follow an audio taper (logarithmic) law so that the physical range of the fader corresponds to the way humans perceive loudness. Unity (0 dB) is typically marked at about 75–80% of the fader travel from the bottom. The top of the fader travel offers a few dB of boost above unity.
Pan Control
The pan knob (panorama) positions the channel in the left-right stereo field of the main mix bus. Center pan splits the signal equally between L and R. Hard left or hard right sends 100% of the signal to one side. Pan instruments across the stereo field for clarity — crowd the center and everything fights for space.
The Main L/R Faders & Bus Assign
Once individual channel faders are balanced, the main stereo L/R master fader controls the overall output level to the amplifiers and speakers. On larger consoles, channels can be assigned to subgroups (DCA or VCA groups) — a single group fader then controls an entire collection of channels (all drums, all vocals, etc.).
Mix Building: Start With Faders Down
A reliable approach: bring all faders to the bottom, then start from the most important element (usually kick drum or lead vocal). Bring it up to a comfortable level, then add other elements around it. Resist the urge to push every fader up — the best mix has space, dynamics, and contrast between loud and quiet moments.
