Mixer Sections & Channel Strip
Every mixing console is divided into the same zones. First map the console, then follow one complete channel strip from input to output.
Mixer zones
- Channel Inputs — XLR, TRS, and TS jacks where signal enters
- Preamplifier Gain — boosts the raw mic or line signal to a usable level
- Equalization — high, mid, and low controls to cut or boost frequencies
- Auxiliary Sends — route a copy of the channel to monitors or effects
- Effects — reverb and delay return channels
- Level Faders — control how loud each channel is in the main mix
- Main & Aux Outputs — signal leaves via main L/R or separate aux paths
The Channel Strip
Signal flows top to bottom through each identical strip on the console.
- XLR or line input accepts the source.
- Input trim sets gain before the rest of the signal chain.
- Insert patches external processing into the path.
- Aux send routes signal to monitors, effects, or another bus.
- EQ shapes high, mid, and low frequencies.
- Pan places the channel in the stereo field.
- Mute and Solo silence or isolate the channel.
- Volume fader sets the channel's final output level.
Master Bus: the main output fader pair controls the combined level of every channel.
Level LEDs: keep signal green; yellow is acceptable briefly; red means clipping, so back off the trim or fader.
Audio Snakes, Rio Boxes & Stage Boxes
An analog audio snake carries many balanced channels in one multicore run from a stage-side breakout to the console. A stage box provides numbered XLR inputs so the stage stays organized.
A Yamaha Rio is an active digital I/O stage box: it converts mic and line inputs to networked audio, commonly Dante, and provides remote preamp control. Its signal path is microphone → Rio → network link → console, not an analog multipin snake.
Gain staging: start muted with the master down, set the source normally, raise the input preamp while watching PFL/meters, keep peaks out of red, leave the channel near unity, and set the master and speaker or amplifier inputs for the room. With a Rio, adjust the remote preamp once rather than adding gain twice.
