Used for
Securing the intermediate (mid) rail to the stanchion post at the required mid-point height. OSHA 1910.29 requires a mid-rail or equivalent intermediate member positioned at roughly 21" above the walking surface. On cable rail systems a similar clip or pin routes the horizontal steel cable through the stanchion body instead of a rigid tube.

Mid-rail clips are small, system-specific, and disappear instantly. Most are spring-loaded steel pins that press into a hole in the stanchion post — pull the pin, remove the rail, release the pin, done. Cable rail systems use a swaged end fitting that threads into the stanchion body and is tensioned with a hex key. Either way, inspect clips and pins before each use: a bent or missing pin lets the mid-rail fall free, which is an OSHA violation and a genuine fall hazard.
