Used for
Aligning bolt holes in structural steel and truss by driving the tapered spike through offset holes before inserting the bolt. The open-end or ratcheting box head on the other end then drives the nut.

"SPUD" comes from the tapered spike (spud) on one end. In the UK and Commonwealth countries the same tool is called a podger wrench or simply podger. Ironworkers in North America know it as an erection wrench — the name refers to steel erection, i.e. assembling structural frames.
